Hawk Headed Parrot | Red Fan Parrot

Hawk-headed parrot is also recognized as “Red Fan Parrot” is an uncommon ‘new world’ parrot originating from the Amazon Rainforest. Hawk-headed parrot is the only member of the species “Deroptyus”. Hawk-headed parrot is usually found in Ecuador, Suriname, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, northern areas of Peru, Venezuela, French Guiana, and Guyana.

Hawk-Headed Parrot

Hawk-headed parrot holds extended neck feathers that can be elevated to form an elegant fan, which significantly increases the bird's ostensive size, and is probably used when endangered. Hawk-headed parrot commonly lives in the undisturbed forest, nourishing in the awning on fruits. It has a dark-brown face with white lines, bare black cover around the brown-eye, green-wings, edges and tail, and red & blue striped breast.

Behavior

Hawk-headed parrots make their nests in tree holes and stumps. They lay normally 2 to 3 eggs and hatch them after about 26 days. The young-baby of Hawk-headed parrot start to fledge in wild at about 10 weeks of age. Only two nests have been observed in the wild, both the nests had one chick.

Aviculture

Hawk-headed or Red fan parrots, even though not mostly communal in aviculture are occasionally kept as coop birds or the companion parrots. While adolescent tends to be quiet, adults can be mostly bad-tempered, obstinate, unpredictable and strong-minded birds, display great hostility towards the humans and other birds accommodated with them (comprising others of their own breed or their own mates), mostly during the breeding period. Red fan parrots, when kept as pets like to connect with one person, need secure-handling, and a patient holder which must be skilled in both bird-keeping and interpretation of parrot’s body language. Though with all parrots, temperament can differ significantly from individual to individual and some Red-fan-parrots make good companions.
